Member Profile ~ Sam Dunlap
Summer 2008

Growing up in the cowboy subculture of the desert southwest, Sam Dunlap undertook a forestry career because he was more at ease with trees than people. By the time he had moved up to District Ranger, however, he understood that he needed people to achieve production. This early exposure to work team development led to Sam’s second career path.

During his Forest Service career, Sam received acedemic training in Organizational Development and Humanistic Psychology at Pepperdine University. After retiring from the forest service in 1984, he earned a Master’s Degree in Organizational Development from Greenwich University. His group’s name, Heal(thy) Community, is a play on words that also reflects their philosophy that good works only take place in competent communities.

After bouncing around Eastern Oregon, Dunlap and his wife, Alice, moved to the Gorge more than twenty years ago. A spiritual quest led them to Hood River where they ran a bed and breakfast for five years before retiring yet again to Home Valley. They thought they’d be relaxing in their “golden years,” but life had other plans. Participating in their community and volunteering for various projects leaves Sam and Alice as busy as ever.

Between rising gas and food prices and the “unholy liason between corporations and government,” Sam believes we are living in perilous times. These things are conspiring to destroy our communities and our relationships with one another. Local currency, he says, is the only alternative game in town. It is worthy of our support.

Many years ago, Sam attended a public briefing on local currencies by the GLCCs founder, Stacy Shaw. When the new steering committee was formed, he chose to participate in the GLCC as a supportive advertiser. Like Michael Shuman (The Small Mart Revolution), Dunlap believes in strong communities as a bulwark against big-box capitalism. With RiverHOURS, the opportunity finally presented itself to be involved in a meaningful way and he jumped at it. Sam uses his RiverHOURS for computer repair, landscaping and health care.
