Mike's Ice Cream

Springtime in Hood River is traditionally heralded by the yearly opening of Mike's Ice Cream. This much-anticipated ritual began over 20 years ago when Mike Kitts and Tassie Mack moved to Hood River and opened an ice cream shop downtown. Like many others, they moved here to windsurf, but, as Tassie puts it, "had to become entrepreneurs to feed our three children."

Since Mike couldn't live without an ice cream shop, they opened one to sell ice cream, smoothies and huckleberry shakes. However, it only made money in the summer, hence the ritual opening and closing of Mike's every year.

Now, Tassie and their son, Josh, have opened Ruddy Duck next door to Mike's. It features eco-friendly clothing for men and women. As Tassie explains, "We thought we could stock not only functional goods but also carry eco-friendly options as well. Now that we're up and running- it
seems what really sells is cool/hip fashion so my kids are trying to help me find cool and hip AND eco-friendly clothing, shoes, gifts, furniture. That stuff's out there and we're bringing it into
little ol' Hood River.”

Where do they spend their RiverHOURS? "Daily, we socialize at the local latte spots sipping freshly roasted coffee paid for with RiverHOURS. We buy organic produce and groceries at the health food store ... and we pay our doctor and dentist at La Clinica with RiverHOURS."
