Allison Smith is the newest member of the GLCC Steering Committee. Originally from a small town in New York near the Canadian border, Allison has been exploring the country for many years, living in North Carolina, Virginia, Colorado, Arizona and California before landing in the Gorge. One thing that drew her to this area beyond the wealth of outdoor activities was the fact the area had its own currency.

Wanting to commit to something bigger than herself that could make a difference in the community where she is making her home, Allison joined the GLCC, and almost immediately began contributing her energy and enthusiasm to the steering committee. She believes that the current financial system is the cause of many problems in our society and the world. Money should be a means for people to exchange goods and services and not the cause of so much stress.
She considers herself a “Jill of all trades,” enjoying the diversity it brings to her life. She currently offers dog training, house sitting, bookkeeping, catering and trail shuttling in exchange for RiverHOURS. Allison loves the entrepreneurial spirit in the Gorge and all the
opportunities for learning and growth.

Looking forward to spending many years in the Gorge, Allison is excited to have found a place where the residents are so engaged in their community. She feels the current economic crisis could be looked at more positively as an economic opportunity. Through RiverHOURS we have the means in place to set a precedent here where the community can still flourish during hard times for the rest of the country. Local currency is only one tool, and through the GLCC Steering Committee, Allison hopes to utilize many methods of improving the local economy.
