Carola Stepper was one of the earliest and strongest supporters of local currency in the Gorge. She received the first RiverHOURS issued into circulation back in September 2004. Meeting steering committee member Scot Bergeron at a Saturday Market in Hood River first introduced her to the idea of local currency, and she found it made sense to her on many levels.

She has been a nurse for 19 years, and arrived in Hood River in 2002 by way of Portland and Maui, after being raised in Germany and returning to the United States in her mid-twenties. Stepper earned a Master’s in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. She was originally employed by the Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles to provide acupuncture treatments to cancer patients at the Celilo Cancer Center.

Stepper later founded the Cascade Acupuncture Center, with offices in Hood River and The Dalles. The center has a team of three licensed acupuncturists and four office staff. They were named the Small Business Success of the Columbia Gorge Region in 2007 by the Small Business
Development Center. The center’s main focus is pain treatment and they offer a full range of Chinese herbs, nutritional products and topical liniments. They provide sliding scale fees based on income and accept RiverHOURS for treatments, products and insurance co-pays.

Carola uses her RiverHOURS to treat herself to Mike’s Ice Cream, massage and clothes at the Ruddy Duck. She also uses local currency for counseling and groceries from Mother’s Market. She expresses her appreciation for the effort and time put in by everyone involved with making RiverHOURS a stronger economic force in our communities.
